The War Against Loneliness

Our nation houses millions of elderly folk suffering from loneliness and a lack of contact with the outside world. Many feel neglected by their families and forgotten by friends. Some have a reached a point in their lives where, for the first time, they are open to the revelation of God's love for them.

Shekinah Christian Ministries has been working since 1991 to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of nursing home residents in Colorado. Currently, we serve over a dozen facilities with weekly visitation, church services, bible studies and musical programs.

Music is particularly appealing and draws many residents to the services. This gives our teachers and preachers a perfect opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, offering comfort and love to elderly saints, along with the eternal truths of God's word.

As with most ministries, the volunteers frequently report of being blessed as much or more than the residents. All the manifestations of the Holy Spirit may occur at the services, including divine healings. One volunteer recounts an experience in which a paralyzed woman was gradually healed of her paralysis as she joined in praise and worship services. The volunteer watched as the elderly lady slowly went from toe tapping to finger tapping, and then began to raise her arms as she struggled to join in the singing. Suddenly, there was a divine breakthrough as the woman raised her arms to full reach and spoke out in praise of God -- she couldn't yet form the words, but it was clear what she was saying.

Others, who already know the Lord, experience the living presence of Jesus Christ through the volunteers. As someone takes the time to sit with them, to ask questions about their lives and to listen to them, the elders' faces begin to glow as they feel the love of the volunteers and their God.

The Shekinah Nursing Home Outreach has only scratched the surface. This popular outreach is expanding throughout Colorado as rapidly as funding and the availability of volunteers permits. Volunteers may first want to join an established program. Others may feel confident enough to reach out in ministry to a new town, with simple guidance and start-up assistance from Shekinah staff.
